Biographical Information

My higher learning educational background starts at Iowa State University where I received a bachelor of science degree in agricultural economics. After working in a bank in Iowa as an agricultural lending officer for 2 years, I entered the graduate program in economics at the University of Iowa where a master's and Ph.D were earned. The concentrations in economics were in monetary theory, macroeconomics and public finance. While at the University of Iowa, I served as a teaching and research assistant and taught evening courses at Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. An additional educational experience was my attendance at the University of Chicago for a General Electric sponsored summer workshop on "Developments in Applied Economics." I have been at Michigan Technological University since completing the Ph.D.

Research Areas

My areas of research and publications have been related to monetary theory, domestic and international banking and education finance. Current research activities include an examination of risk preferences of savers and inheritance tax laws.

Teaching Areas

My major areas of instruction are in money and banking, macroeconmics, financial institutions and principles of economics. My philosophy of teaching starts with the idea that education is a process of enhancing and, to some extent, stimulating learning by students. Depending upon the level, students enter the classroom with a set of skills and knowledge. The teacher draws on these skills and knowledge and uses education to further extend the skill and knowledge base of students. My personal view of teaching assumes that students have as much learning ability as the instructor. Thus, the instructor who has more experiences and training in a given area is simply a facilitator in the education process.
