The Archival Drive

 Can't copy file/out of space

While copying a file to the SBE Archival storage space, you may get the following errors:

In Windows, Windows File Copy Error

In Dos, Dos File Copy Error

Neither error makes any sense, but that's the kind of thing we expect from Microsoft these days.

These errors are caused by a special file system flag that only Outlook and Outlook Express can set. This should not be a problem for most users as both of these programs have been removed from our labs like most of campus.

(03/01/06) Note: Internet Explorer on Windows 2003 sp1 by default also uses this Flag! Be careful when using IE on win2k3 for email site programs like Huskymail, Gmail, Hotmail etc. We have made our servers imune to this problem, but it will not undo the flag if it exists.

This Flag persists across NTFS volumes, which means that it stays with the file as you move from computer to computer. So if you choose to use Outlook at home, the flag can stay on your document even when you bring it to our Outlook-free labs.

Checking for the Flag is simple. Right click on the file and choose properties. It should look very similar to this.

File Properties with Outlook Flag

The important part is the addition of the "Security:" label, which on a normal file isn't there.

Security: This file came from another computer and might
be blocked to help protect this computer.

Fixing the problem once you know it exists couldn't be simpler. Click the button labeled "Unblock", and press OK. The file is now "normal" again and should work like any other.

Try recopying the file, it shouldn't give an error any more.
