SBE Policy on Waivers of Course Prerequisites
[ Approved by the SBE faculty on October 24, 2000 ]

POLICY

The course instructor, the student's concentration advisor, and the Dean's Office (in practice, the Associate Dean) must approve requests to waive a course prerequisite.

PROCEDURES

  1. The student should discuss plans for waivers with their concentration advisors as part of the regular advising process.
  2. The student obtains a SBE Prerequisite Waiver Form (available in the SBE Office of Academic Services) and the appropriate University Prerequisite Waiver Form.
  3. The student completes Section I of the SBE Prerequisite Waiver Form and the appropriate University Waiver Form and submits both Forms to the instructor of the course for which a waiver of prerequisite is being requested.
  4. The instructor will complete the "Reason for Waiving Course Prerequisite" portion of the SBE Form and sign both the SBE and the University Forms if he/she determines that the prerequisite waiver is appropriate.
  5. The student then submits the SBE Prerequisite Waiver Form to his/her concentration advisor for approval. The student's concentration advisor will sign the Form if he/she determines that the prerequisite waiver is appropriate.
  6. The student then submits the completed SBE Prerequisite Waiver Form and the appropriate University Prerequisite Waiver Form to the Dean's Office. The Dean's Office will approve the waiver only after it is satisfied that there is sufficient justification to do so.
  7. If the Dean's Office approves the waiver, the student will submit the University Prerequisite waiver form (signed by the course instructor and Dean's Office) to the Registrar in order to gain admittance to the course. The SBE Prerequisite Waiver Form will be filed in the student's file in the SBE Office of Academic Services.
  8. The Registrar's Office will be instructed to accept only those University Prerequisite Forms signed by BOTH the instructor AND the Dean's Office.
  9. The Dean's Office will submit approved SBE Prerequisite Waiver Forms semi-annually to the SBE Curriculum Committee for its review.

SBE Policy on Waivers of Class Standing Prerequisites
[ Approved by the SBE faculty on October 24, 2000 ]

POLICY

The course instructor and the Dean's Office (in practice, the Associate Dean) must approve requests to waive a class standing prerequisite.

Sophomore standing: For internal SBE purposes, 24 credits, exclusive of credits earned through Advanced Placement testing, will define sophomore class standing. (Note: the University uses 30 credits to define sophomore class standing.)

Junior standing: For internal SBE purposes, 54 credits, exclusive of credits earned through Advanced Placement testing, will define junior class standing. (Note: The University uses 60 credits to define junior standing.)

PROCEDURES

Students may use either procedure below to waive a class standing prerequisite.

  1. The student will present the University Waiver Form to the course instructor and to Dean's Office for approval. If approved, the student will present the University Waiver Form to the Registrar's Office in order to register in the course. The Registrar's Office will be instructed to accept only those University Prerequisite Forms signed by both the instructor and the Dean's Office.
  2. The student will discuss waiver of the class standing prerequisite with the course instructor. If the instructor approves the waiver, he/she will communicate orally or via email with the SBE's Director of Academic Services who will arrange to have the waiver submitted electronically.

SBE Policy on Late Drops

The University Office of Student Affairs--not the SBE--approves late drops. To request a late drop, the student must submit a letter to Dr. Gloria Melton, Associate Dean of Students. According to University policy (see drop policy section of student handbook) "Only those written requests that clearly involve extenuating circumstances will be considered. Extenuating circumstances include prolonged illness, serious accidents, death in the immediate family or of a close friend, or similar situations truly beyond the student's control."

If requested, the instructor of the course may submit a letter of support (to the Office of Student Affairs) for the late drop. Likewise, if requested, the Dean's Office or the SBE Office of Academic Services may submit a letter of support to for a late drop. The Dean's Office or the SBE Office of Academic Services will submit letters of support in only in cases of truly extenuating circumstances and only if the instructor of the course approves the late drop.

SBE Policy on Declaring a Concentration

1) Declaring a Business Concentration
Students may declare a concentration in Business Administration by applying to the SBE and meeting qualifications as stated in the University Catalog. Students are encouraged to work with a faculty advisor representing the concentration that they intend to elect upon completion of the Business Core.

2) Eligibility for Upper-Level Business Core Courses
Business Majors can register for 3000 - level Business Core Courses when they have completed the following requirements:

  • 45 semester credits earned
  • Cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher
  • Successful Completion of the following Business Core I courses (11 credits) with a GPA of 2.0 or above

Business Core I Courses (11 credits)
BA1200 Fundamentals of Information Systems (3 credits)
    BA1700 Business Orientation (1 credit)
    BA2300 Accounting Principles (3 credits)
BA2700 Business Problem Solving (4 credits)

  • Completion of all pre-requisites for the 3000-level Core Courses in which they choose to enroll
  • Completion of the following General Education Requirement: UN2001 Revisions (3 credits)

Rationale:
SBE students must demonstrate successful completion of the selected lower-level business core requirements in order to register for upper level (3000,4000) business courses. This provides some flexibility for students.

3) Admittance to a Business Concentration and Eligibility for Upper-Level Business Concentration Courses
Business Majors can be admitted to a concentration, assigned to a concentration advisor (if they have not yet already selected one) and be eligible to register for upper-level concentration courses when they have completed the following requirements:

  • Completion of Business Core I-II courses (24 credits) with a GPA of 2.0 or above. (Students preparing for the MIS concentration must also complete BA2200 Business Programming - 3 credits.)

Business Core II Courses (13 credits)
    BA2100 Business Statistics (3 credits)
BA2110 Quantitative Problem Solving (3 credits)
BA2310 Accounting Principles II (3 credits)
    BA2500 Business Law (4 credits)

  • Completion of the following General Education Requirement (cognate): EC3001 Principles of Economics (3 credits)
  • Completion of all pre-requisites for concentration courses in which they choose to enroll
  • Completion of Career Services registration materials
  • Note: Some concentrations may have additional requirements for entry. Please check with concentration advisor.

Rationale:
SBE students must demonstrate successful completion of all lower-level business core courses in order to be eligible to declare a concentration. This ensures that SBE students are well-prepared to succeed in their concentration.

SBE Policy on Admittance to a Concentration

  1. BSBA students will be classified as "undeclared business" students unitl they are admitted into a SBE concentration.
  2. Students meeting the general admittance criteria AND the requirements for upper-level core courses AND the requirements for upper-level concentration course can apply for acceptance into a SBE concentration.
  3. Students must apply for acceptance into a concentration by November 1, March 1, or August 1 of the academic year.
  4. Faculty members in a concentration will review concentration applications and decide on acceptance. Students will be notified within 15 days of application deadlines.
  5. Students must continuously maintain University, SBE, and concentration GPAs of 2.0 or better. Students unable to meet this standard will be given one (1) semester to rectify the situation. If this standard is not met after one semester, students will be re-classified as undeclared business students and will need to re-apply to a concentration if they wish to remain in the SBE.
  6. Dual degree students must satisfy the same requirements as SBE majors.

This proposal will apply to all new SBE enrollees (including transfers) beginning fall semester 2001.

Rationale:

  1. This procedure will ensure that all SBE students complete their first and second year business core courses during thier first two years.
  2. This procedure will allow SBE sophomores to begin 3000 BA/EC courses in the second semester of their sophomore year if they have met the stated requirements.
  3. This proposal will ensure that SBE students complete their mathematics and communication requirements in their first and second years.

Administration:

  1. The SBE will establish six Banner codes for 'undeclared business' students, dual degree students, and students accepted in each concentration (accounting, finance, industrial marketing and management, management information systems).
  2. The SBE will monitor University, SBE, and concentration GPAs continuously.
  3. The SBE will need to request that a concentration GPA of 2.0 is added to its current University and SBE 2.0 GPA graduation requirements.
